SERVICE CENTRE Neuenheimer Feld (ZNF) Dispatch of infectious substances

Infectious substances are substances that are known or suspected to be capable of causing disease in humans (UN 2814) or animals (UN 2900). This also includes biological substances of category B (UN 3373) and clinical waste (UN 3291). Legal requirements apply to the dispatch of these substances and must be complied with. Exemptions are available for transport of patient samples, blood, tissue, organs, and faeces. For more details, see paragraph 2.2.62.1.5 ADR.

Reference list for packaging of infectious substances:

Some of the required packaging types are available from the Hazardous Goods Officer. 
Further special packaging can be obtained from the following suppliers:

  • AirSea Deutschland: BioPack 1 (for up to 4 secondary packaging units). BioTube 50 ml (with absorption material, bubble wrap, hazardous goods label, and multilingual instructions for use).
  • Alex Breuer GmbH: UN-approved combination packs (inner packaging with a capacity of 50 ml to 12 litres). Packaging for the dispatch of diagnostic samples in accordance with packaging instruction P650.
  • Com-Pak International: Infecon 1000 (up to 27 sample tubes). Sample transport container withstands a pressure of 95 kPa. All required notices on the outer packaging.
  • CurTec: Biomedical packaging, UN-approved for class 6.2, Ambient and Biofreeze versions.
  • Inmark Inc. Infectious and Diagnostic Shipping Systems: 2 in 1 (cardboard box with divider, 2 pressurised plastic bottles with cap, 2 suction inserts, 2 bubble wrap for sample containers, 1 Label BioFreeze (UN) certified Cooler Kit).
  • Kappa corrugated board Wiesloch: MedicSafe (UN-approved disposable packaging for two or five test tubes).
  • Sarstedt: Dispatch packaging for medical examination material (protective container 126 x Ø 30 mm, with absorbent insert, autoclave-capable).
  • ZARGES: Reusable transport containers for clinical waste (approval under class 6.2 for infectious substances with high hazard potential).

Special provisions for the packaging of infectious substances

Special packing instructions that must be observed separately again apply to contagious substances of category A (UN numbers 2814 and 2900), P620 and biological substances of category B (UN 3373), P650 (german version only).
